HaHa....Didn't want to sound like I'm formally conceding the first knockout round spot to our British friends, but if frontline talent (and experience) + depth + coaching are worthy prognosticators, then England does get my nod as the favorites in our group. Heskey and Wayne Rooney are both the real deal and methinks will be major PITAs for the US backline (defense). And, England WAS quite impressive while romping their way thru qualifying; only Ukraine gave them a stiff challenge- what happened to the Croats!?. England does have a history of underachieving, but I like the make-up, chemistry and coaching aspects of this year's natl. squad.

Of course, all that said, I'll for damn sure be rooting for my fellow Yanks and am really looking forward to the opening match vs. England. I seem to recall that we were underdogs once before against the full might of the Imperial Crown, only to pull thru with flying colors--> oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave...ok, now I'm getting misty eyed :p

Re: soccer's overall popularity in the States....Well, it's still a mixed bag. Football (our version), basketball, baseball, and probably hockey too, are all much more widely followed. The smashing success of the US women's natl. team several years back fueled a brief surge in popularity, leading even to the (brief) establishment of a professional women's league.....But that momentum faded, and soccer once again resides on the national back burner. That said, talent does continue to emerge at the collegiate and professional levels, our MLS league continues to draw relatively decent-to-very-good attendance at the majority of venues, and American players still find success in the Euro. leagues as well. Internationally, we're not an elite team, for sure, but we are consistently competitive...not to mention, capable of pulling off a surprise or two. I'm fairly confident the late King George III would grudgingly back me on that statement :)

Cheers, Jeff.

@jstoyz:

Nice commentary. I do have a few observations though.
1. The English have an abundance of talent in other regions of the pitch as well, not just in their frontline.
2. Emile Heskey sucks. He has sucked since the dawn of time, still sucks today and will continue to suck long after everyone else who sucks has stopped sucking.
By the way, his second middle name ('Ivanhoe', would you believe) sucks too.
As does Peter Crouch whose only accomplishment is that he's as tall as the Space Needle and therefore good in the air.
Lucky for England they also have one Jermain Defoe who would be the ideal choice to team up with Wayne Rooney up front.
3. England wanted to get back at Croatia for eliminating them in the qualifying stages for Euro 2008, so they let Ukraine beat them in their away match.
4. The Croats got confused for a minute, mistakenly believing they were from Croatoan Island instead of Croatia and as a result failed to show up during their World Cup qualifying games, allowing a.o. England two runaway victories.
(Only reason i can think of for their poor performances, seeing as they played with basically the same team as they did in 2008.)
5. Why do Yanks insist on saying 'hockey' without making the distinction between 'ice hockey' and 'field hockey'? I can assure you that in many parts of the world the latter is much more popular.
Makes about as much sense as calling the US type of rugby (...) 'football' considering it's a sport that's mostly played with the hands.
Or indeed as much sense as the United States calling itself 'America' when the continent consists of plenty of other countries besides the US of bloody A.
(Always struck me as arrogant, that did.)
6. Mia Hamm is ridiculously overrated. And yes, i've seen a number of matches of the US women's national soccer team from start to finish, so i'm not judging prematurely.
Personally i prefer Brandi Chastain, albeit that could be because i find her last name much more appealing for some reason.
7. How does the nation's successful 'secession' from the British Empire guarantee the USA more than a snowball's chance in hell against England at the World Cup? A more reliable indication would be comparing the clubs where the members of both squads earn their living. I rest my case.
8. Speaking of getting one's ass kicked, i will go on the record here and now stating the movie 'Kick-ass' does indeed kick considerable ass. You haven't lived until you've seen an 11-year-old foetus called Hit-Girl tearing through a legion of armed bad guys like they were made of sponge cake. Or indeed until you've seen the head villain hitch a ride on a bazooka-launched rocket through a high-rise window and explode in mid-air. :oP

Guys Does Anyone Know Jeff Fenholt? The guys That He Claims That He Sang With Sabbath in 1985? Does Anybody Have anything For him ? Beside Sabbath Ofcourse Those Are Available Anywhere...

troynew said...

Of course i know Jeff Fenholt.
He played the Jesus role in 'Jesus Christ Superstar', just like a.o. John Farnham.
He sang on some demos for what Tony Iommi intended to be a solo album but eventually became Black Sabbath's 'Seventh Star' album feat. Glenn Hughes on vox.
He was never officially part of Sabbath.
From '85 to '88 he fronted Christian AOR/melodic rock band Joshua (replacing Steve Fontaine) during which time they recorded the superb 'Surrender' album.
Apparently he also at one point joined an early incarnation of M.A.R.S., but left before 'Project: Driver' was released.
In both Joshua and M.A.R.S. he made way for Rob Rock.
I can upload Joshua's 2 on 1 CD (EP 'The Hand Is Quicker Than The Eye'+ LP 'Surrender') for you if you want.
It's arguably the best title in the Long Island Rock Classics series, surpassing even Bystander's 'Not So Innocent' and Sabu's 'Heartbreak'.

@troynew:
1. England is a well rounded club, top to bottom, but I'm not quite as impressed with the status of their D (recent injuries, among other concerns, might have an effect) as with their forwards and midfielders. Opinions vary, but I'm confident that the physical and skilled USA frontline will create a few quality scoring chances IF they can avoid playing on their half of the field the overwhelming majority of the time. USA will employ a defense first strategy, no doubt, but given that the frontline is the American team's strength, and D could be a problem, they're gonna have to take a few chances, and capitalize on any Brit mistakes, in order to give those playmakers an opportunity upfield.
2. Hmm, not everyone thinks Heskey sucks, including his coach and quite a few European talking head commentators. I do hope he proves you right, however, and sucks really bad throughout the group stages of the WC.
4. LOL, the Croats did seem to pull off an amazing disappearing act.
5. Well, there is really no need to generally differentiate b/t "field" and "ice" when discussing hockey from a North American perspective. Ice hockey is far more popular, widespread and visible, though field hockey enjoys small pockets of popularity, predominately in the NE USA. In my case, I was listing professional sports that are more popular in the USA (compared to soccer) as part of a direct reply to a query, thus using accepted North American vernacular seemed germane. While such distinction may not always be readily put forth by North Americans when chatting with Continental audiences, I seriously doubt that an intent to offend exists in the majority of cases. We just don't think about, watch, play, nor discuss field hockey much over here, just as I wouldn't expect that most Europeans, Africans, or Asians differentiate between American football and European football in most internet discussions, unless relevant to do so.
6. Mia Hamm ended up with the lion's share of celebrity, endorsements and lasting popularity vs. her teammates, which was really too bad. The entire team contributed to their run of success and should have, ideally, shared equal time in the domestic limelight....There was nothing overrated about their collective accomplishments, though, nor the mini-explosion in domestic interest at the grassroots level their success ignited....Not implying that you were knocking the team as a whole :).
7. My comments intertwining historical commentary and the WC matchups were tongue-in-cheek. Based upon your criteria, however, how do you explain USA reaching the quarterfinals in '02? Just a one-off fluke? Other teams played poorly? My explanation: Maybe. But that's why they play the games.

Also, dismiss the 2-0 victory over Spain last summer if you desire, but I'm not so readily dismissive. Excuses can always be manufactured for why a favorite lost, but most over here (and some elsewhere too)simply believe the Americans played very well. We need to play a physical, defensive style against England, try to frustrate them, and then capitalize on mistakes. The Americans ought not be passive, though, since: 1) American physicality and aggressiveness frustrated Spain's smaller midfielders and severely disrupted their usually brilliant and technically precise passing game. England is not a clone of Spain, I realize, but the Americans will still have to disrupt play at midfield and knock the English off the ball some of the time in order to give the forwards opportunities. Not doing so will overly stress the backline and eventually it will break. 2) USA's defense is their consensus weakpoint (injuries, age, recent performance), so overreliance on the backline, as just mentioned, spells trouble.

Advancement to the next round, even if that means playing Germany (yet again), will be viewed as successful. Anything beyond that and would I be wrong to think that even you might consider sending a little respect our way? ;)

Does anyone know if Chequered Past issued a second album?

I hate to tell you but "futbol"(soccer) is about as popular as "ping-pong", unless Mr. Gump is playing ( Go Forest ), here in the U.S.( of A ) (it does have America in it and that must be why everyone wants to sneak in here). I, personally, do watch a little bit when this event comes around. My Dad, 28 year Navy Veteran, and yes, since you continue to bash us so much -- YOUR WELCOME, was stationed all over the world so I didn't grow up as some hillbilly farm-boy Yank. Most AMERICANS would rather watch a Little League Baseball Game than these long tedious 1-nil games. They're athletes, the scores can be exciting but many games are just too slow for us. Plus, where are my awful Bud Light commercials during the game...45 straight minutes of game with no interruption...me stupid AMERICAN no understand.

That said, good luck to England, Israel, Japan and Iraq...and if California has it's own team now since they're not really part of our country anymore, good luck to them too. Hopefully we won't hurt our U.S. team players if they come home early.

I love this forum but this passive-aggressive love toward MY country just took over my brain. Oh, Kick-Ass was only good if you like to see young kids get seriously hurt...it was really weird dude.

Have fun watching all three million Cup games and I'll have to decide if I pull for Kobe or Kevin.

Anyone who is having difficulties with downloading should use JDownloader...it is sooooo sweet.

troynew said...

@Rufuskrause:

Actually, the US, Canada and Cuba are pretty much the only American nations where football (or soccer if you will) is not the most popular spectator sport.

What you call a tedious game could well be considered the world's no. 1 religion.
Which is more than i can say for American football for instance.
To multitudes outside the US (including yours truly), having to sit through an entire NFL game would constitute cruel and unusual punishment, almost as bad as having to endure a full-length cricket match or watching 18 rounds of golf.

"YOUR WELCOME"?
If i had a penny for every time i've heard that 'Without us you'd all be speaking German' speech, i'd be as rich as Bill Gates and there would be no need for me to sneak into the US in the first place.

Speaking of which, i'm sure there are plenty of folks who wouldn't want to sneak into the USA (unless they mean to blow it up) even if it were the last country on earth.
In which case there'd be no country to sneak in from and the only borders would be of the natural variety.

Sorry it slipped my mind for a sec that i'm not allowed to downplay the US national soccer team's momentous achievements because my country was once liberated by Yanks.
Oh wait, those were Canadians. (Ah well, they're Americans too.)

FYI, i don't think Israel and Iraq made it through the World Cup qualifiers. They might have though if they had competed in an easy federation like CONCACAF.

Anyway, there's no USA bashing going on here. (I wouldn't dare, it being God's own country and all. Heaven might strike me down!) Just a friendly discussion about ACTUAL football, with some minor collateral damage.

PS:
How come California is no longer part of your country? Did the San Andreas fault open up and swallow it whole when no-one was looking?

As for 'Kick-Ass': I'm not a big fan of superhero movies as a rule, but this one was highly entertaining. The spanking Hit-Girl got (after killing several dozens of people) was meant to remind the viewer not to try this at home, that using violence comes at a price, that CGI can make anyone look cool, that the head villain is always the most formidable opponent and last but not least, to lend it Oscar worthy depth. It's about as disturbing a movie as 'Alvin & the Chipmunks'.

While you are, of course, correct that Canadian forces led the allied repatriation of Holland in WWII, you're overlooking "Operation Market Garden," during which the US 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions suffered heavy casualties on your country's behalf. The Germans, unfortunately, did win that round, but if the Yanks hadn't subsequently stalled Hitler's very well conceived counterpunch in the Ardennes in late '44, while heavily outgunned and outmanned, your country might have remained under German/Axxis occupation much, much longer. Nowadays, given how much I like German food, beer, cars, culture and frauleins (a very attractive, yet very married, female friend is from Munich), such a proposal seems a bit less threatening (albeit to one who sits thousands of miles away)....tongue-in-cheek comment- I don't really want Holland to be occupied as it might screw up the flow of Heineken from Amsterdam to my favorite liquor store :)

No offence mate, but your comments were stereotypical American nonsense. I've been living in the 'U.S.A.' since 1998 when I moved from New Zealand and in that time I've learned how to like your national sports. Funny how Americans can never do the same for other countries. And before you think I'm some ungrateful immigrant, I'm in the Army and served in all the hotspots so I'm doing my best to give something back like your Dad. Other than that AOR rules the game. Check out www.glorydazemusic.com for the best AOR reviews on the internet. I'm the user dangerzone and have been writing for the site since 2002.

Sounds like a plan so cunning one can pin a tail on it and call it a weasel.

PS: Just came across a TV guide listing saying 'El Abrazo Partido' is about a guy from Buenos Aires called Ariel. Can't say i'm surprised your life's story is eventful enough to inspire a movie of the week, but you being "an adorable slacker who thinks the solution to his ennui is to become European" part seems a bit of a stretch. ;P

@Sofia:

'Someday you'll collect?'
That's what i'm afraid of. During my last near-death experience i beheld an ominous black pit burning with fire and brimstone rather than a tunnel of heavenly light.
(Returning my copy of 'The Descent' in favor of the slightly less unsettling 'Disney's Little Mermaid' DVD may prove a futile exercise at this junction.)

@Melodic Master:

No need for a conversion program, unless you intend to switch religions or sexual orientation.

My own rip @320 kbps:

Never heard of Max Lucado or Gerardo.
What's ML's album called, so i can try and find some song samples?

My copy of Mark Pogue & Fortress still looks good as new, i think.
Only played it about 10 times in total over the course of two decades.

I wasn't aware it was possible to completely wear down a CD, unless it's a CD-R copy (Memorex being the worst brand as far as i know, and self-printed labels add considerably to their deterioration in my experience).

SOFIA said...

@Melodic Master
So here it is, having certainly lived up to its name (Arrival delayed -got it?- took me only 5 attempts and 2 hours to upload! lol), without any further "delay":

Btw thanks for pointing out this song for me (Used to be in love). Never gave it the attention it deserved until tonight. Great ballad with very powerful performances (voice and guitar)! I played it 4 times in a row and this is a rare thing for me to do for 1 track!

Hi everybody,
I have been looking for this song from MARCIE FREE "Don't Look Back". I think it wasn't released because I can't find it anywhere.

jstoyz said...

@ troynew:
Thanx for the Mark Pogue upload, never heard of this guy until now, kind of a mix of MR and AOR to my ear. BTW, Max Lucado is a Christian pastor and author located in Texas. I'm not sure if he sings as well.

@ homer64:
I kindly second the request for Blinding Tears-S/T and look forward to it. Thank you in advance.

@ Sofia:
Thank you for the Arrival upload. I like this one, quite "catchy" in places with excellent melodies. Looks like there is a 2nd album as well. Somehow I never discovered this band, which is especially surprising since they are from my home state of Colorado.

@ All:
Would anyone be able to upload the track "Through the Night" off of the CD: The Heat- Untold Story Vol. I (2007). Seems all of the available online links are sourced from the same initial rip, which has a defect halfway through this song. O/w, the rip is fine. This CD includes the song "Too Far Too Fast" that was featured in two movies from the '80s- "Distant Thunder" and "True Colors." Never saw the flicks, but love the song.

Finally, is anyone familiar with this CD--> Mark Allen- S/T (1992) (Music Alley Syndicate) (USA)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220603360276
